Mutative

Who Uses Mutative

Open-source projects that replaced Immer with Mutative, and what they reported.

These open-source projects depend on Mutative directly. The quotes come from the pull requests and release notes in which they adopted it, and each describes that project at that time, not every workload. The projects were checked against their default branches on October 9, 2026.

Appsmith

Appsmith, a platform to build admin panels, internal tools and dashboards, replaced Immer with Mutative in its client:

Using mutative instead of immer, this has reduced the main thread scripting by about 1 second.

From appsmithorg/appsmith#38993, merged on February 6, 2025. The same pull request also removed a deep clone and skipped Mutative for the first evaluation of its tree.

InstantDB

InstantDB, a backend with auth, permissions, storage and presence, replaced Immer with Mutative, which does not rely on auto-freeze. In its performance tester, a single transaction took about 8 ms with Immer, and about 40 ms as pending transactions were added:

Mutative is about 3ms on a single transaction. As I add more pending transactions, the size seems to stay at 3ms!

From instantdb/instant#243, merged on September 19, 2024.

Notesnook

Notesnook, an end-to-end encrypted note-taking app, replaced Immer with Mutative in version 3.0.11:

we have gotten rid of immer and replaced it with mutative for immutable state management inside the app. mutative is almost 10x faster so you'll notice slight improvements in app responsiveness.

From the Notesnook v3.0.11 release notes, July 18, 2024. The 10x figure describes the library; for the app, the release notes speak of slight improvements in responsiveness.

Plate

Plate, a rich-text editor for React, moved its plugin stores to zustand-mutative in version 42, and its core package depends on Mutative:

All plugin stores now use zustand-mutative for immutable state updates, which is faster than immer.

From the release of version 42, merged on January 9, 2025.
